View Full Version : Indie game meetup?

I just submitted a new topic for meetup.com to have an indie game developers meetup sometime - if anyone is interested. Although just a few mins later I see there is a meetup that is similar, but had no members.
http://gamedev.meetup.com/
So my topic suggestion will most likely be rejected... anyway this is a long winded way of asking if anyone in SF Bay area around San Mateo wants to meet up and chat about indie development, we could use this as a way to organize a meeting
:)

You might want to look at going to an IGDA chapter meeting (possible San Francisco or San Jose):

I help run the Michigan chapter, and its been a great opportunity to meet people

I'd meetup, sounds like it could be a good time. I'm up in Sacramento, so it's not terribly far or out of the way. I should also look into going to be a couple IGDA meetings, do you have to be a member to attend?
The downside of the IGDA meetings are that I always find out about them a week after they happen, and the SF chapter isn't having another meeting until Fall. I'd also like to go to something that was mainly indies.

Here in Michigan, we only have (or should that be "had") one major retail game company (Outrage), so our area is dominated almost entirely by indies and students. It's pretty cool too, because we get to do things like have members demo their completed or in development games (Paul Kerchen will be demoing at the next meeting).
I suppose in the Bay Area, you probably are dominated by major developers, and they probably don't spend much interst on the indies. However, I'm sure there are quite a few indies there, and if you could find out who, maybe you could branch off afterwards and discuss "indie stuff". Just an idea.

Good call. Geoff sounds like an interesting guy, he's got a pretty big background from what I know. I know that the guys from Chronic Logic (Pontifex) are down there as well. Would be nice to put together some sort little indie meetup.
Although I wouldn't mind something on a night other than a Tuesday or something. I'm big on Fridays and Saturdays when it comes to driving a couple hundred miles round trip :)

Great idea! I used to belong to the IGDA, but I dropped out when I tried to give up writing games (lol as if, right). It'd be cool if something came together down here in the South Bay.

I'd be very interested in a meet-up for game developers in the Bay Area. I'm planning on entering the indie business and would love to meet others who are like-minded.

Andrew, that may be so - but in London, ON, you have an awesome off-road R/C track & club (London RC) while neither Toronto or Vancouver do! :(
So I'm just as jelous of your local events as you are of mine, hehe.
But back on topic, why not start an IGDA chapter? It sounds easy enough to do, not that I've tried.

start one?? that would be really cool.. but dont you have to like.. have written a game first?:) i'm still working on the plan for my first indie game, which will be out next april.. by that logic i think i might as well start up london's second RC club too:D
