Yesterday I had a couple of my younger (12 - 14yrs) relatives over...

I took this as an oppurtunity, and showed them my current in-dev game "Scrambled EggZ".
To my great surprise, they LOVED it! :D
They played it non-stop for a good hour or so, and they where constantly laughing and giggling (annoying, but a good sign ;) ).

This has really boosted my drive to get this game finished and on the market. :)

Yay for younger relatives!

Congrats Jagg, that's excelent news. Though we haven't released anything playable to the public, we've had a few people email us about the game expressing their excitement. It really is a huge rush when you see people actually appreciate what you spend so many hours slaving over. It feels good to be validated :)

hehe
I know the feeling.

I had my friend's young brother (10y/o) messing around with it.
The fact that he thought it was a real Industry-level game, just made me smile all week.

:)

I cant play your game because I use Mac OS. Seeing the screenshots... indeed, the artwork is industry-level I think. Only that you don't follow the rule set by "leaders" such as ID or Blizzard to create steretypish characters ;)

Thanks!

Blizzard and ID (at least in the last 10 years) didn't do any platformers. Actually, the most notable platformers around are Sonic, Mario and Crash Bandicoot which *usually* pointed more towards other platforms.

Also, not following the rules was by intention. didn't want it to be just another platformer.

What? ID did the commander Keen series, and Blizzard did ithe lost vikings and blackthorn which are both "sidescrollers".

Not sure if the last keen was pre or post 93' though ;)

I recently sent a 3 level demo of our new platform game to our graphics artist so he could see his work in action. His two nephews (ages 10 + 14) played the game for well over an hour! When they had to go home they asked him which shops they could get their parents to buy the full game from!!

That definately made me smile :)

Here's some screenies if you're interested . . .

Cute game, my nephews would like it too i think ;)

Reminded me of a yellow version of "Cool Spot" playing "bombjack"

Can't wait to try that.

That's great news! I love little pick-me-ups like that. They really help you get going on your project.

On the other hand, it's a major bummer when you do a ton of work on something and feel like you have something of value, and then you get absolutely no feedback about it at all. It's like you didn't do a thing.

Or when you show your game to friends (who aren't game developers) and since they know you they suddenly think they're qualified as parasitic game developers too. They therefore proceed to critique your game with suggestions such as, "I think you should add DX 9 shaders" or suggest you add some feature that couldn't possibly work or would require a full team of people to implement. This is a major bummer because you feel like your work will only be appreciated when you bring it to a level that you know you cannot attain by yourself.

Anybody else had these problems before?

I get this all the time.

80% of them don't know what pixel shaders are, which makes it even more annoying...

Haha.

I have a friend who helps me out with some of the creative design in the game I'm working on (you know which one it is, Punchey). He's an amazingly creative artist (great creative power, terrible finisher), and he's constantly coming up with things that would be really cool... if I could program artificial intelligence, and my game was a 3D rpg instead of a rolling ball game. Oh, and if I was coding for a holodeck instead of a pentium.

But his stuff is often useful. Because I have +7 Editor Magic, I'm often able to use his ideas in heavily modified form... which of course leads to his accusations that I've perverted his creation.
