Well, I'll be buggered, but look at this:

http://www.stud.tu-ilmenau.de/~paulgeis/xap.htm

(Well, those of you up-to-date on the Java front)

Not a lot of people know this but this is basically Alien Flux, but with the name of the original game I wrote for the Amiga in 1993, XAP. It's even got the same controls as the original! The only things missing are all the different whacky aliens and... well, all the other stuff that makes AF 10 megs and the reincarnated XAP applet 250Kb!

I feel quite smug that XAP has suddenly sprung back from the dead, even with its original name!

I'm not sure if technically it's legal for him to copy the gameplay and the name but I don't really care because it's long distant history. So I'll be sending him an email of thanks :D

Haha... I'd already known that applet... but I hadn't realise that it's XAP :o

It's really weird... I was just submitting AF to Jars.com when I spotted it just down the page, and I thought, Hey! I wrote a game called XAP, I wonder if someone's rewritten it for Java? And the craziest thing was - they have! The world just gets smaller and stranger every day.

At the very least, you could ask the author to add a link to AF.

I am pretty certain I still have XAP on a magazine coverdisk somewhere.

[2 minutes later...]

Yep, Amiga Format disk 54a ;-) The floppy label even says "A strange and great new game from Cas Prince" ;)

It's a real shame no-one bought the full game :( I've not got it any more, and it's got a bunch of crazy bosses in it. It's kinda fun to play too in a nostalgic sort of way. Mind you the demo doesn't exactly run very well in an emulator.

hello, i am this evil faker redone xap with name AND idea.
feel a little shamed as i see the original creative head wants to make money with it.

(also he has some selfdestrucing style in guide so many people to
MY xap...)

btw.: "only things missing are all the different whacky aliens" is not right, there are in fact about 10 different enemy classes, including rocket launchers, writing-mine-layers etc. just see them at later levels... some good reaction and a trackball recommended.

so many thanks to princec, it was his mind done this. maybe i will find some way to payback. for the first, i would like to get a licence of AlienFlux, if i came around this everytime annoying "help-me-i-am-german-and-own-no-credit-card"-thingy.

thanks&greets
Paul

Hi Paul and welcome to the Dexterity indie forums! This is the start of your slippery descent into indie game development. No worries on the Xap front - I played it some more and saw a few more gidrahs too and I'm glad that it's still a fun game after all this time! But why babies? Ugh! I want to shoot them! And where's the sound? Doesn't seem to work on mine.

ps. you can pay in all sorts of other exciting ways than CCs I think on swreg, like cheques and stuff :D
