What are you doing when you got disturbing neighbours. Neighbours who are noissy and sounds to irritate you and can be explained as low level people you can't communicatie with. What is the best solution? Negiote, or otherwise.

I get complaints all the time for being to loud or this or that. :D

Although I would say attempt some sort of reasonable negotiation... if that doesn't work, build a really big wall.

Record the sound in your appt and give them the tape or play it super loud :)

A friend in University had her problems with a very noisy neighbour (think TECHNO, 3 am, LOUD) took a very unique approach to the problem.

She invited him over for lunch one day and talked him out of his behaviour over a plate of good pasta and wine.

As psychology goes: Once the neighbour accepted the food, he felt obliged to give her something (of equal value), so he really could not refuse to close his early morning disco hall. (Actually, this is a double bind, he did something wrong, he knows it, because she complained about it before, she cooks lunch, and is all friendly while asking for him to stop)

Needless to say, it worked miracles.

Me, i would've just called the cops or the landlord, but I am a stupid prick... :D

We had this kind of problem a few years ago. Our neighbour was a party animal, playing loud music till 4am.

we decided that each night the we wont be able to sleep because of that, he wont be able to sleep in the morning afterwards.

But at 7am (when HE finally fall asleep) there's no law that prohibids playing Van Halen & Metallica. our neighbour got the hint pretty quickly.

If its late night, play loud music when he sleeps as some other guy suggested. Otherwise, try negotiation.

I personally just take my stereo system and turn it up to as loud as his, and then some. Then I don't care if his music, or whatever, is loud =) I can't hear it.

I am amazed at the number of people here who suggest fighting fire with fire!

First of all, it's important to know what the environmental situation is....
Do you live in a dormitory or private neighborhood?
Is this area usually a "party area" or is this one neighbor everyone's problem?
Are you sure you can cast the first stone? (in other words, are you sure you do nothing that's offensive to your neighbor?)Second, there's often very little reason in starting a feud. Don't start blaring Metallica or throwing fishing weights at the roof -- that just makes everybody angry.

Third, are you certain that your neighbor understands that this is an issue? Have you asked them to keep it quiet before? Is this a seriously habitual problem?

Now, as for dealing with it -- it's going to depend greatly on those environmental factors above, but it ultimately becomes a chain of responsibility.

If the neighbor is unable to control himself, you first ask him to try to be more considerate. Lobby with other neighbors to get them to also ask him to keep it down. Make sure he understands completely that this is not something you appreciate. And the only way you can be sure if somebody understands something is to explain it in simple, concise, clear terms -- don't try to "send signals" and for goodness sake, don't send mixed signals; if you want him to stop playing music when you sleep, the don't play music when he sleeps.

If that is not successful you look to the local governing structure -- in the case of a dorm mate, talk to the residence advisor or the housing department. If it's an apartment building, talk to complex management. If it's a residential subdivision, see if there are deed restrictions or a home-owners association.

Failing that, there are usually noise ordinances in most urban areas that are enforceable through the local constabulary.

I don't want to sound like I'm trying to get all officious and whiny, but tit-for-tat-style activities will probably only lead to further angst. Most people who are inconsiderate enough to be rowdy in the early morning hours probably won't have the insight to see your retaliation as a message -- they'll just think your an a--hole.

Lastly, I am not a lawyer, nor am I a police officer, nor do I have even a remote grasp of what the real issue in your neighborhood might be -- anything I've said in this message is purely opinion and you should treat it as such.

Drop a "WARNING" note in their mailbox, that will make them silent.

If that doesn't help: call landlord.

If that doesn't help -- follow patrox's piece of advice: Record the sound in your appt and give them the tape or play it super loud :D

Thanks all for your replies. I think Daniel reply is a good one.

I agree with Daniel. Simply talking to the guy (watch your tone. You should be stern, but not sound like you are making a threat) can do wonders. Every noisy nieghbor I ever had, I talked to and it seemed to work.

Except for one guy. But he moved before things got messy between us.

I had a very very noisy neighbour once. He would have his mates over and get drunk and play loud music at 2-4am, yell abuse at passersby (this was on a main road in a downtown area). As the apartment building was all rental, I complained 2-3 times to the landlord.

When the landlord went to visit him, he almost had to break the door down to be heard knocking - the music was *that* loud.

Anyway, a short period of piece ensued but it didn't last. I complained again and he was handed an eviction notice. Now, this is not a good thing - if you get evicted it will be considerably harder to get another rental place (evictions are handled by the govt. and probably kept on some nasty database somewhere).

He hired a lawyer and was obviously given some sobering advice as he gave his lawyer his speakers from his stereo and agreed to leave in 3 weeks :)

The moral of that story is complain to the landlord if it's a rental and check out what the tenancy laws are where you live... it will probably play out in your favor...
