Yep, the 1st one works better for me too. However I'd like to see if you can make the EYE aspect of it work more, it was definitely more "eye" like in the 2nd.
I think I was kinda wondering in the 2nd one why there was an Eye with a L attached to it. Then I thought well it was probably to imply a nose perhaps, but then the "your left my left" think also came into play. Maybe it would be better just to focus on the eye kind of like CBS but coooler ;)
With the 1st one, you might be able to make the eye thing work better by making the "e"pupil more centered by making the Eye orb dropped directly inline with the text. as kind of quick test, just draw some squinty anime looking kick ass eye shape minus the pupil. Then write your text across that so that is begins and end with the corners of the eye, now perhaps clip the "e" with the "lids" of the eye?
You should be able to show Left-eye-ness with the fact that we all can tell right away what eye we are looking at if given a picture of just one eye. Has to do with the corners and their orientation and that we have that doohickey (is that the tear duct?) in the corner closest to your nose, so you won't need to do the L thing if you cue into some of that kind of stuff. :)
Here are some more Eye type logos:

Keep in mind to make sure your logo translates to Black and white (no gray) and Grayscale as well. For example, pictures do Black and white (1bit) pretty badly. But there may be times in printing or something that you only get one color, black or blue for example and you need the logo to remain true to your design. A fax or phone book listing could be another situation where you would run into constricted options to render your logo. The best are clear under all situations.
Hope that is of some help :)

Hehe, Actually it's a figure that you should be able to see an L, an e and a D in.
The L is simple to spot, the e is the overall shape and the D is lying on it's side at the top. ;)
Yeah, def has to work in B&W!
