I know this is off-topic, being not about games, so I'm putting it in the general chat forum.

I'm thinking of doing a shareware app but I need to do some market research first - I don't know how big the market is. Where's a good place to start looking for this sort of info?

Look at the competition. How good are their products, how many registered users do they have (sometimes you can find out about this), how does their website look (professional? do they offer phone support?), when was the last time they updated their product, how large is their company (how many employees), do they pay for advertising (where and how much), what do other people think about these products, and so on. This should give you an impression about what kind of money other people are investing in this particular market.
