There's an item back in the school made of iron that you need, but it's small and easy to miss if you don't obsessively wave your mouse cursor over anything that looks like it's not just a background tile. Look near the fireplace.

(If I ever do this sort of game again, I think I'm just going to give up on pathfinding and use arrow-key movement.)
