Just under the wire there's a new issue of IndieGamer up.

A number of reviews, the usual release wrap up, and an interview with Monolux.

Hmm, interesting that Popcap is now getting into 3d accelerated, download-only games. Pretty damn good game it is, too.

Actually they've been doing this for quite some time now. DynoMite had 3d accel for instance.

True! First time it's been drawn to my attention (as I have had zero interest in the popcap stuff I've seen in the past)

Popcap's a cool company. While they don't make the kind of games we as developers are generally interested in (there's only so many more times I can match 3 colors of anything before I'll have to take a running leap off a building) I admire their approach to design and the general quality of their work.

Oh hey, that post promted me to check out www.monolux.com and I'd just like to say it's a very nice website that goes beyond your average sale site. I particularly liked the "Ask the Monolux" part. Check it out if you haven't done so already...

The ask part is great. And in case anyone is wondering it's under "support"

Wow the quality of the new games is higher and higher. ( Zuma really rocks! )

Anyone remember what the original title of Zuma was (i.e. the arcade game it was based on - came out around the mid 90s, if I recall it had a space setting rather than a mayan setting)?
This technique seems to work very well for Popcap. Get an older game and re-package it with a new and very specific "theme" (e.g. bust-a-move + dinosaurs = dynomite, marble-maze/pipeline + rockets = rocket mania). I wish I had access to their art department :) - they always do a top job and put together a beautiful "style" for the games.

The game you're thinking of is Ballistic (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/B00001ZUGU/), released for the Playstation and Game Boy Color.

Oh, it's a clone? Well in that case I'm not impressed at all; I thought it was original.

Thanks for the comments on the Monolux site. I tried to find a better place to put "Ask Monolux" on the site, but I don't want to create a new section of the site just for it. Any suggestions?
