I've had a look at some copy protection software on the net. Some were very expensive and some were dirt cheap. All of them of claim that their software is the best of course.

Can anyone recommend good copy protection software? I haven't a clue how to write my own. I just want to make it hard for Joe Average to pirate my game.

Copy protection is what way?
As in for generating keys and wrapping the exe so that it cannot have keygens, etc.?

If so, I definately recommend Armadillo (www.siliconrealms.com)

The standard liscene is only $99 and its a great product (we use it ourselves).

Unfortunately "off-the-shelf" packages are freely cracked.

do a google search on "armadillo crack", and see how many times people have already gotten around that protection.

If you have your own method, someone has to specifically crack your game, as opposed to downloading a generic crack.. (if you get my meaning?)

Actually there are very few sites...with only one crack site coming up.

This has absolutely nothing to do with Armadillo protection being cracked. That is a pirated copy of the older version of the program (2.6 - there are up to 3.5 now)...

So in rebute, "getting around the protection" is not a very fitting explanation of what exactly is going on with it. As these so called "cracks" are not "generic cracks" but simply posting of full version serials + old version of the program itself. There is a huge difference here.

When a person posts a serial online for a game, they only post the code - which can be added to a pirated code list for any new version. Very few people actually host the pirated file.
In those cases (who usually dont have the bandwidth) you can shut them down much easier than sites that just post codes.

If you look at most methods, Armadillo is definately in the top 3 of best methods. Online methods are very flawed (as we switched) and your own custom solution is definately not going to be much better.

Save yourself some time and get some decent retail protection.
