It appears that ShareIt has a list of upload sites and ASP has a list, but neither of these lists are a list of quality sites; they are just long lists. I find I'm better off uploading my pad files to a few active sites rather than sites that are not very active.

I thought it might be interesting to compile a list of sites that are active. According to your stats, from which sites do you get the most downloads?

Here's my list:

www.download.com
www.gamealbum.com
www.soft32.com
www.1000files.com
www.softak.com
www.afreego.com
www.newfreeware.com
www.amazingfiles.com
www.sharewareriver.com
www.rocketdownload.com
www.gregsoft.net/
www.freedownloadscenter.com
http://superdownloads.ubbi.com.br

Please list yours.

If anyone else decides to post on this topic :D , it would also be useful to know some popular sites that are not U.S. sites. What's the most popular U.K. site, Australia site, Germany site, France site, etc., etc.?

Thanks.

We just released our game on monday, so we don't have a lot of numbers to go by, but a couple sites seem to have bubbled to the top (out of the 80 or so that I submitted to... been a buisy week for me).

gamealbum.com and listsoft.ru are on top right now. Gamealbum will almost definately get some advertising money out of me. soft32.com has hit the site over 500 times this week, but no downloads or page hits (probably my icon). It might be worthwhile to advertise with them, but I'm not sure yet.

Right now over a third of my hits are coming from penny-arcade. A couple of my friends are regular posters in the forums there, and they put my banner in their signatures.

A revision to my original question on this post.... (perhaps easier to answer)

What are the best 5 sites to upload a new shareware product to?

Good thread; one worthwhile distinction between types of sites may be whether or not they allow you to upload your demo.

Yes, that's true - most of the sites I listed have a way or another of reviewing the games they list. In fact some of them have rejected my game quite a few times before it got good enough to be listed (fileplanet, pcgameworld, avault, possibly gamextazy). The affiliation based sites offer more or less visibility depending on how well they think the program can sell - obviously they also require an affiliation program (globalshareware, topshareware, brothersoft). 5star-shareware also requires a custom built version.

I get the feeling that a download site cannot at the sime time offer good visibility, be free and allow all the games on the site.

Diodor,

You must be kidding! I found your game very interesting and addicting. (Original visual respresentation BTW) Of course I had no chance to see the previous versions but I didn't know that these sites ever reject some games...

Well, what I like in new business you always discover new things. We should try to be rejected with our next few projects
:D :D :D

CNET (download.com) appears to be the most popular download site for people who live in the U.S. Where do people who live in the U.K. go to download shareware? Do they use CNET too or is there a more popular site? How about people in Australia and Canada?

We get lots of orders from these three countries and I'd like to know the popular site for each of these three countries. If you like in one of these three countries, would you please post what you think it is.

Thanks.

In the case of GameXtazy, I think I understand what's going on. GameXtazy is from Alawar. The main page shows games made or published by Alawar (including our Betty's Beer Bar), so they get the best exposure; the rest of the games are fillers, to make it a site where there are new games, and therefore attract people to visit periodically.

TJM, thanks for your list. Like Diodor, I too find download-free-games.com good, but whether downloads from that site translate into sales is a different matter.
