Ok I was how many are like me where having a cup of coffee and software development, seem to go hand in hand. It seems to stimulate your mind more.
Sorry, but option three should be "half" not "helf"

On an average work day I'd have 6-7 of those big travelling mug's (~2 normal mugs fit in there), a grande from Starbucks, and a few normal mugs (morning before work, and after dinner)..
Not exactly the most healthy of drinks I know, but dare I say it.. a nice hot coffee helps me relax.

I'd dearly love to kick coffee. I stopped smoking overnight years ago and never had the slightest inclination to start again. But I know just how most other smokers feel if I translate it into coffee terms :(

I used to drink 6-7 during the work day and a couple more of the work place. Now I kicked coffee out, along with any caffeine stuff (teas, soda, etc) Been clean for about 3 months, was ratehr hard during the first couple weeks but now I don't really miss it. I do have a problem finding nice hot drinks replacements but herbal teas, cevada (no idea how its called in english) and natural orange juice (not hot but hey :)) does the trick.
Also, I have found that mangos and tangerines help me stay awake ;p

The best advice I saw on how to kick the coffee habit was to first replace it with hot tea, such as Earl Grey or green tea (anything with caffeine). Then after about a month, make the transition to caffeine-free herbal tea. For many people a big part of the coffee addiction is just having a hot drink.

Hot drink part is definitely true, as is the tea part. For me it's the combination of caffiene and a drink that I won't gulp down in 2 minutes (as opposed to a soda or juice, which disappear before I get upstairs). I can alternate between coffee and tea without a problem. Lately I've been limiting myself to 2 cups a day of coffee, in an attempt to ease into a healthier lifestyle, but the missing 2-3 additional cups are replaced with teas. Unfortunately tea (Earl Grey, Red Rose) seems to be much worst for teeth than coffee, so that's not a perfect solution either.
You may have put your finger on the real addiction Steve. It's not the caffiene, but it's the relaxing hot drink aspect of it.

For a nice hot drink / energy booster, you can also fill a cup with boiling water and add a teaspoon of instant (vegetable) broth. Yum.

Considering the number of "don't drink it" responses, maybe a followup soda/soft drink poll would be interesting.

I'm not a big coffee drinker. The only time I drank coffee was when I had very little sleep and I was trying to prevent from nodding off at work (It was usually because I had been up all night working on a game project).
But now since I'm a full-time Indie, if I get tired, I just take a nap. :) There's no need to drink coffee to force myself to stay awake anymore.

What?? You mean you drink Red Bull which gives you wings and then Mountain Dew on top of that for extra wind?? ;)
About coffee: I don't drink it. Much like alcohol I tried it, hated it, and never looked at it again. I do like tea though.. By the way how is tea bad for your teeth? I think someone said that earlier.

No Alcohol, NNNNNNOOOOOO I kill you !1!!1!
ROFL j/k. I personally can't stand coffe, never drink it although lots of people at work do. I don't really drink softdrinks either, Coke taste funny without any burboun in it. I do have a tendancy to drink lots of water at work, I estimate a good3 to 4 litres a day. I have a sports drink type bottle at work that I would fill up about 6 times during the day. I have to take a fair few toilet breaks, but I feel like crap if I don't have lots of water :-P

It stains your teeth, and in my experience, much more so than coffee. Have a few cups of Earl Gray without cleaning the cup aside from a quick rinse and you'll see the nasty stuff that builds up. I'm not sure if lighter herbal teas have the same effect or not, but the more common teas definitely do.
I have to agree that tea does seem to stain more...
...except when I put the teabag in cold water(to quickly get a kind of "iced tea"). It still flavors the water, though admittedly less; I don't think it's diluting nearly as much when cold. But you can taste it and there is almost no visible change in the water's color.
I usually don't have anything but water or an occasional soda(they're tempting since the dining hall around here charges the same amount no matter what or how much you put on your plate...they only take issue when you start trying to take stuff out), or Odwalla fruit drinks in the morning, but when I make the choice it's usually tea anyway.

There was (a few months ago) a news report on http://www.reuters.com about a research study done on tea drinking benefits. IIRC it's actually good for your teeth vs. tooth decay. Unfortunately it can stain teeth.
It also mentioned heart benefits and some other stuff. Wish I could find the article, but the news search function is pathetic.

I like a hot cup of coffee or tea. I have recently switched to decaf in both to be more healthy and also feel less guilty if I drink an extra cup. I usually drink 2-3 cups total of either one in a day.
What I am wondering is if decaf coffee or decaf tea is still *bad*. The bad stuff in coffee and tea is caffeine correct? Once you remove that, are they still bad? The decaffination process itself might be bad, but put that aside for a sec... I don't consider staining bad since you can brush your teeth, get them cleaned etc..
Does anyone know?

Us Brits are endlessly amused at how in america caffeine is seen as thoroughly evil, but owning a submachinegun is seen as healthy ;)
Tea does stain your teeth, but just buy teeth-whitening toothpaste ;)
At lionhead we drink far more Tea than Coffee, but in the south east of England, thats to be expected I guess (although at least half the team arent from the UK).

Tooth whitening toothpaste just grinds off your enamel :( Don't ever use it!
Healthy teeth are just off-white. Ivory coloured, in fact.

funny, I always found it to be the other way round. My family are from t'north but I live dahn sahth. I see a ton of coffee drinkers down here and a ton of tea drinkers up there.
Me, I chose the IV option.... if only.
I don't drink a lot of cups in a day, but I do love it strong. Normal people put one or two spoons in, I usually go for about three.
Alas, I haven't quite figured this whole healthy lifestyle thing yet. When I'm not drinking coffee I substitute it with pop (Americans: soda).

<fx: strangling noise> Nooo! You drink that evil instant poo! At least if you're going to drink poisonous filth, make sure it's fresh from a percolator!

It's funny, but I've tried various perculated and filtered coffess and none of them really took my fancy. I think it's just because I was born and raised on instant that my tastebuds have grown to like that the best.
It's like the way some people will eat black pudding (yum!) and others will vomit at the mere sight of it. If you're raised on something then it becomes natural and tatses nice.
