Hey..I've just released a 2d space adventure. Please download at http://svoyage.tripod.com/svdemo.exe . The game requires DirectX 8 and a 3d accelerated video card

I tried to run it but it just crashes on my system. 1 gig pentium class, 64mb geforce 2, and sblaster audigy running under xp.

(it crashed before I see anything at all by the way... it switches video mode and then dies)

Note... the title in the start menu says "Space1" -- probably should change that to the game's title.

Thx for the input Steve...anyone else have these problems? Crashing before the game started?

I didn't try downloading it, but I just wanted to comment on your web site. The two complaints I had with it were that it didn't say anything at all about the game, and I couldn't see any good screenshots (the few that you had were scaled down). I know you just released the game, so maybe this is just a placeholder site.

OK, I downloaded it and it also crashed. It appears to be a null pointer error (instruction at 0x00435308 referenced memory at 0x0000000c). I think you have a null pointer that you expect to be an array, and you are accessing something 12 bytes into the array. Hopefully that helps debug the problem.

Edit: I wanted to add that I am running Win2K on a P3-450, 320MB memory, GeForce 2 GTS 64MB, driver version 30.82, DirectX 8.1

A couple of things... it crashes on my machine (I downloaded after you said it was fixed) WinXP with 1gb ram and GF4. Your setup didn't create a shortcut for it in the start menu, either (just the uninstall).

Tried it again after the fix. Still crashes for me too :-(

Still crashes. Its the same instruction address that is causing the error, so it's the same problem, not a different one.

Same problem here. I'm running Win 98 SE, 128ram, geforce2

i dont mean to be harsh,
but why are you releasing a game that obviusly wasnt tested
on other machines?

If the game won't run on other machines but does for you, maybe it's because there's something missing in the installation. Did you forget to include some files?

sorry for all the trouble guys. I'm looking into it. The game is working fine on my system, and the betas I tested on other systems before the release of the demo were working fine on other systems..

I must look over the code to see if I have changed anything..in the mean time, please tell me if

http://svoyage.tripod.com/setup.exe

works on your systems. It was an early beta of the game.

Thanks for all of the comments.

Yes, that version runs for me. It does have some bug in the menu system where the screen flashes very rapidly between the menu and an all blank light green screen. I suspect you are swapping the front and back buffer twice per frame and that is what is causing the flickering. Being an early beta, maybe you are already aware of this, but I just thought I'd mention it anyway.

Thanks kronos..and yes..i was aware of the flickering..and your'e correct..its because i'm swapping twice per frame..at least now i'm sure I made an error in putting together the installation files...I'll check it out

Thanks again

OK, the new version runs fine. Also, sorry but I didn't notice you PM'd me until just now. Comments...I've personally never been too entertained by this style of space combat/trader type game, so I'll let others comment on that area (I wouldn't be a good judge of quality there). As for things I noticed playing:

The text on the intro and exit screens are quite blurry. The fonts within the game itself (like when you get to a planet) look bad. They need to be antialised. Also, some of the text in those screens also went too far to the right and I couldn't read the end of the lines.

I thought it was awkward that I could only fire with the right control button and not the left one. That is a major annoyance for me personally.

At the one planet where you can buy and sell items, I could not figure out how to get out of the screen. I didn't make the connection that you press E to get out of there too. I eventually just started mashing keys and found it that way. You need to mention on the screen "Press E to Exit" or something.

Finally, when I was done with the game, I could not exit. On the exit screen where it said at the bottom "press space to exit" or whatever, I pressed space and NOTHING happend. I could not get out. Furthermore, trying to Alt-Tab out was annoying because it did not restore the proper resolution and the game kept flashing between the combat screen and the menu screen. Not sure what that was about. I eventually did an end task to kill the game. The next time I ran it, it let me exit by pressing space. Not sure what happened the first time, but I definitely pressed space about 30 times to no effect.

The new version run fine with my setup, which usually is picky. I still had some other problems:

- There was a major problem with speed. Everything beginning from the main menu was spinning like crazy. I could not use the keyboard for control as even a very fast tap turned the ship more than 180 degrees. Funnily the mouse worked fine, ie. slow controlled turns. The battles were also impossible because of the speed, my reflexed do not go down into the microsecond range ..

- I agree that the text is really bad looking, it is hard to read and dimmy. I had the same problem with text in the communication screens running over the window sides.

- I could not find how to use the mouse to steer the ship (other than turn it). The ideal control had been steering with the mouse, using the buttons for thrust and using the weapons with the left hand (left control)
