I was wondering how I would go about making up a company name without infringing on any copyrights. Is there a way where I can make sure that the name Ive made up is not being used?

You need to do a trademark search for the names you are thinking of using. Most importantly is to look in the state you will be doing business in (where your office is). You should also register your busy name as a trademark with your state. I forget the price, but I don't believe it is that expensive.

Now is probably as good a time as any to find a lawyer, though you can do this stuff yourself.

Your question is hardly unique. Everyone who started a business wondered about this and many other things. And would you believe it or not, someone figured out how to do all of this and put it in a book :).

I suggest you browse Amazon or your local bookstore for a recent book with practical advice. Many of these guides are updated yearly to incorporate the latest changes in the law.

There are also magazines for business owners and the self-employed person. Many run special discounts for starters. I have been in business for two years now and so far my subscription (which includes free telephone advice from lawyers and accountants) has cost me 10 bucks. I am sure there is an organization like that in your neck of the woods.

And of course, check with your Chamber of Commerce (or whatever it is called) and the IRS (the tax people). It is in their interest to promote businesses, and they are more than willing to help you get started. If you are supporting the local economy, the government is your friend.
