Recently I recieved this solicitation from Razor Media LLC:

We would be interested in speaking with someone in regards to your downloadable game, which we had seen on download.com. We are currently looking to partner with companies to promote our own gaming site, www.splashspot.com. We are interested in bundling our code that would put a splashspot icon on the users desktop as well as ad a link in the favorites folder as well as the games directory. I can assure you this is not adware or spyware.

In return we will add a link for your software product in the favorites menu and games directory, along with other games or links. We have contacted a number of companies that are interested. Our reach is growing very rapid as we are signing on companies everyday. Your link would be included in all of the downloads from partner sites as well.

Splashspot.com has a pretty good Alexa rating, so they must be doing something right. Anyone else get this solicitation? It reads like a mass mailing, so there must be others here who received it. It sounds pretty innocuous to me, but I don't know anything about this company, so any info would be appreciated.

I haven't had one. However, whenever anyone goes to great lengths to assure me that "this isn't" something, I usually read "this is".

For example :

"This isn't a timeshare". - It's a timeshare.

"This isn't a pyramid scheme." - It's a pyramid scheme.

"This is not a circular". - It's a circular.

It takes only a line of code to add a link on the desktop (especially if you change the installer), as if adding a link on the desktop to unrelated websites is considered a bit contevercial, putting even more links in the favorites and the games directory wold be considered (al least by me) as an annoying act, not to mention an adware (so it doesnt display popups, but why it should pollute my favorites everytime i open it?). I hate those.

Yeah, I agree that that does sound like adware. I guess I'll pass on this offer.

I also recieved the same email. My first thought was the same as yours -- this IS adware.

I got this email thru the contact form on my web. All the effort (which wasn't very much) I put in to add the contact form and remove the email address from my pages suddenly feels like it was totally worth it. I should hope that I'll get a lot fewer bogus/questionable offers like these by not allowing just anybody to grab and trade my email addresses around. Neat.

same as above post... including the consideration on how good is to have a contact form instead of public email :)

This is what they wrote:
My name is {whoever}, I am a Sr. Media Buyer for Mindset Interactive. We are a full service-advertising agency, based in Irvine, California. After reviewing your site I have become very interested in building a relationship. We can pay up to $0.25 per US unique download of a bundled exe for our at-games product.
We can offer live login and realtime stats. Also I am interested in distubuting some of your free downloads to our network of publishers. AT-games has over 300 affiliates, we average 150,000-200,000 installs a day.
I look forward to speaking with you soon.
Take care,

Guess they're always on the lookout for more exposure!:D
I don't think it's reasonable to expose ourselves for what might turn out to be negative press in the long run.
My 2cents worth, could be wrong of course!
