I was wondering if anyone knew of any software directory websites that are free to submit to? What I am talking about is game sites like Gamehippo.com or how download.com used to be. I don't really want any bloated shareware websites :P though I might just submit to those as well... My current philosophy is 100% free game is one of the best ways of free advertising for other games...

thanks

There are so many of them that it's pointless to name them off here. I think what you really want is some software used for site submission. You can try SharewareTracker from www.accusolve.biz. Note that even if you don't want to buy the software, the demo version will put a very large list of sites in your hands. But it's only $15 to license the game for a month and there's an offer on now to buy the permanent license for $59 (it was $89 previously).

I agree GameHippo is a very good site to be on, and surprisingly it was not listed in SharewareTracker's list when I last checked. Probably no other site generated more downloads for me than GameHippo. And they only take freeware so most of the people that read this can't take advantage of this site.

In a way, I am disproving what I just said that it isn't worth naming off sites on the forum. It happens that the site you brought up was one of the few exceptions--a high traffic game site not listed in Shareware Tracker. I think generally when doing site submissions, you don't want to spend a lot of time thinking about which ones are really good to be on. It's not a strategic challenge like other things are. Just get a good list and upload to all of them like a robot. Well... a reasonably intelligent robot that observes submission requirements.

I think we need a FAQ, I dug through the archives and found a few things, but still not really what I'm looking for. Still I see other questions (even ones I asked before :) ) Such as what is a good web host, where you can get royalty free images - sounds - code, how much to pay artists - musicians - coders, what forums to look for genre based game development, commonly asked business and law based questions, marketing, affiliation, and still many more things...

Maybe a separate FAQ forum, where you suggest things to add, or ask questions and when they are answered they are added to the main FAQ.

Unless of course this already exists.

Does GameHippo accept shareware? At the top of their site, it says:

No Shareware
No Demos
Over 1000 Freeware Games to Download

No. They will call you names if you ask them to cover shareware.

They also take forever to cover freeware sometimes, if they get around to it at all. :)
