View Full Version : Police/SWAT.....copyright?
Hi, does anyone know if Police or/and S.W.A.T are copyright? In my game, I plan to include a few sunken objects. One of this objects happens to be a swat shield which can be used to block stuff. My question is, is it ok for me to use the word SWAT or Police on the shield without bracking some kind of copyright law?
Thanks.
I'm pretty sure you're okay to use the words SWAT or Police. Obviously there's no copyright or trademark on the word "police" itself and the word "swat" is an acronym for "special weapons and tactics" and every major police force has one. I doubt they had to license the name.
So the words are fine but you could get into trouble if you try to use the shield/badge design of an existing police force like the LAPD. I doubt the designs are trademarked or copyrighted but it's best to create your own logo to stay safe.
Ok thanks. I don't plan on using any logos, just the words.

Well, using "City Name Police Station" is actually not allowed, for example, LETS SUPPOSE there is only one police station in New York. If you put "New York Police Station" would not be allowed (tho I doubt they would pick, but they COULD), using Police Station only would be ok.
I remember Duke Nukem 3D using LAPD on the back of some jackets
