See this? (http://www.puppygames.net/downloads/hallucinogenesis/hallucinogenesis.jnlp) (Java Runtime (http://www.java.com) required)
Looks good, yes? SOUNDS AWFUL!
The music's great but I desperately need someone excellent to get the sound effects together for it (preferable in Fruity or SimSynth format but WAVs will do). There are, er, about 15 or so sound effects I think that need doing. And they must be brilliant.
Please quote for the job and and give me a link to some sample work in an email to cprince@puppygames.net.
Cheers.
Cas :)

Nice game! Controls need some work. :)
When these java games install, do they stay on my PC? How do I uninstall it or play it again?
Also if you need music try www.gamenoise.com

Webstart takes care of install / uninstall. If you run Webstart which will be in your start menu somewhere you'll find the application and you can remove it from there. Or at least you can in the 1.5 version I'm using.
You can also run it from there and it asks you about putting icons on the desktop too. Otherwise you can just bookmark the link :)
And you had better not be serious about the controls!
Can you do sounds?
Cas :)

*click*
Some files can harm your computer
Only the most daring users will click Open or Save. Most will Cancel.
*Open*
Windows cannot open this file:
File : Hallucinogenesis[1].jnlp
Use the Web service to find the appropriate program *OK* (most users will think "WTF is a web service" and Cancel)
File Type: Unknown
Description: Windows does not recognize this file type.
The following Web sites have a comprehensive list of file extensions. You might be able to find information about this file type there:
Java has just lost you a customer. Oh, yes, its my fault for not having the Java Runtime (although "I have Windows XP and every other game runs just fine"), but you lost a customer nonetheless.

Just for fun, I clicked your Java Runtime Required link. Great, what now? I'm a clueless user so I click Free Download (big link, green, top left).
Another cryptic message about certificates and trusting content. I'm daring so I click OK. Internet Explorer seems to freeze, the toolbars don't move. After some seconds I download the plugin.
License Agreement, Typical install, fine. Copying new files, this may take several minutes. I alt-tab to other web site. A new chance to forget what I was initially doing.
It did take a few minutes, indeed, and another toolbar and cursor freeze. *Finish*, finally. Now what?
Oh yes, the game. Uh oh, Java decided to open a new IE window leading to their site. Spyware! I want my freedom! I was typing!
Anyway. Lots of progress bars, then a new "downloading" dialog. I must wait again?!?
This application is requesting unrestricted access to your local machine and network
What??? Unrestricted access? No, no f*cking way, with all the viruses, spyware and spam in the Intarweb?!?
Last chace - I click Details. WTF is this? More tech speak! No way. *Exit*.
I end up losing 15 minutes, scared, with no game, and a new icon in my taskbar. In the unlikely case I chose to get this far.
Compare this to the typical click "download", click "open", wait, click "Next", "Next", "Next", "Finish" and I'm playing. Do you really really want your potential customers doing this work?

dude, lighten up. this isn't a public release. prince - consider running it as an applet not java network launch protocol. or do an installer and a batch file for an executable. the part where java web start does not recommend running your program is no good. what did you use for 2d? i see your site has links for opengl and openal. the look is very nice.

Correct Cas,
But now I'm afraid you just HAVE to say us.
Is the situation with "your" Java is really so terrible on current stage? :(
You were talking amount of good words about it but if only installation still requires so huge efforts from the potential customer...
Nothing personal buddy. I really like to hear your opinion on this concrete situation. Not on the Java problem in common please.
Are they (SUN) are promissing you to publish everything at their sites and as OEM with all their hardware partners?

Gabe is, basically, exaggerating a great deal. And I haven't bought a code signing cert yet and it wisely tells you that my code is of unknown provenance and can't be trusted. Unlike anything you've ever downloaded from Gabe, which could be .. well, anything. How do you know Betty's Beer Bar hasn't installed a child porn p2p networking trojan? You don't. But this is a developer forum and I'm kind of expecting people who want to look at alphas to be prepared for a rough ride.
Try installing Java yourself and see how much of a pain it is.
I agree it's a shitty experience over a modem though. But I don't care about modem users any more.

It complained about opengl when i tried it in linux so i had to boot up the ol' XP, it worked through webstart without a hitch.
I thought your LWJGL was cross-platform?
Anyway, that's a really cool game. It needs more depth beyond 'dozens of levels', but yeah it's just an alpha.
i don't understand the babble about webstart since it always works just fine for me.
compared to the usual "click-click-read eula-click-yes i agree anyway-click-yes install to C:\Progam Files\ anyway-" installers it is a true "modern" way of installing software off the internet, and the certification system can't hurt. all installers should work like this, the old ones are only designed to install software from a CD-ROM or diskette.
the problem with webstart is just this java-ish gui that looks alien to the user because it is not native gui.
i am ranting. btw the game is quite cool, i actually like the controls, very casual :)
