Are 2 Dimensional platform games still sellable today through the internet or in retail, to live from it? Most people say that today 3D games are sold on the shelves. Also 2D retail games like Jazz Jack Rabbit and Rayman Gold 1 are sold for a very low price as budget game, but this is because those games are very famous. So for new 2D platform games there is much doubt if it is worth to develop it. If it isn't possible to sell, it isn't worth the time. But how can I figure this out on a better way?

dont abandon 2D platform games so quickly.
doing it in 3D just because people say that its the future
is ignorant.

you can make a very good (&sellable) 2D platform game
that will outsell a normal budget 3d game.

I think that for retail, 2D games would be a difficult sell, but not for online sales.

I have enough confidance in 2d platformers to be making one at the moment. Enough people keep asking me for one to think that I can sell a reasonable number of copies.

2d is a hard Sell to publishers and gaming magazines. I suspect the average game player couldn't give two hoots as long as the game is good.

I was working on a retail 2d Platform game once. It got scrapped in favor of a 3d game with the same name with 2d is old hat given as the reason. Shortly after that Abe's Oddysey came out. It wasn't even a scrolling platform game and was magnificant.

I look at my current Platform game engine and think if only I had 20 artists and level designers... Sigh.

I saw the screenshots of Ashes at Yamisoft (http://www.yamisoft.com) and got a bit worried that the competition is going to be a bit strong I've decided to combat this by commisioning a tileset from Yamisoft.

I still break out my old NES games from time to time. Good gameplay never dies, and I have more fun with my NES games than some modern games. I thought Final Fantasy 1 was leaps and bounds better than Final Fantasy 7. More strategy and they actually had a hint of difficulty!
