I'm fast getting to the point where i'm going to have to find some contract work to get some money back in the bank. But i'm at a loss where and how to find this work. I want to work at home in my office, but here in the uk most of the contract work is on site. Over xmas I was working at Guildford based company, two hours trip there, and two hours back.
I've worked on ps2 for years, but I guess thats out of the question, but i've work on PC and DX for longer and can get up to speed on j2me or brew. So getting the contratcs should not be a prob, but I just can't find them.
Anyone know where this elusive work is?
There must be a agency that deals with kind of stuff. But when I search the net all I get is on site contract work hits for data base and SQL. :-(

There are job listings on www.gamesindustry.biz there maybe some contract work on it also.
Looking in the latest copy of EDGE magazine, here are some agencys that you could try:
www.opmjobs.com OPM
www.datascope.co.uk
www.aswift.com Aardvark Swift
Hope this helps.

Ta, i'll fire of some e-mails. I had a look at aardvark site this morning, nothing but on site work shown. Guess I should mail them anyways.
I here from friends all time 'yer, theres loads of contract work out there'. But when you go and look its all hiding. I'm sure i'll crack it soon, if not its back on the train four hours a day again. :-(

yeah, I'm in the same boat.
got about a month and a half left on my current contract which isn't going to be renewed.
I really don't fancy doing trips to London and back either.
another site a mate in the industry pointed out is
Creative Personnel (http://www.creativepersonnel.co.uk/content_static/home.asp)
they're supposed to be quite good as well.

I don't know the quality of the listings, but www.gamedev.net and www.gamasutra.com (free registration required) do have job / contract boards as well.
The real key is establishing a reputation and a list of clients you already have a relationship with. It seems kinda dicey until then.

errrrm........ i don't mean to badmouth gamedev, so lets just say that gamasutra has *much* better audience ;)

The problem with both those sites, regardless of the audience ;) , is that the job's listed tend to be mostly US companies and often only permentant positions.

Word of mouth can help a lot too. You can get work by knowing someone that knows someone who needs something done. Make sure you thoroughly go through all your contacts, and be sure to meet new people whenever possible. Terrific and unexpected opportunities come along just by networking.

where were you working at guildford? i work at lionhead here in sunny guildford ;)
I think the problem is that a LOT of good(ish) games companies in the UK folded quite recently, so there are a lot of qualified games coders looking for work, and thus its a tough market.
If I were you I'd take some non games work, just to pay the bills.

If I did live in Guildford contract work would not be a problem, I live on the Isle of Wight. ;-)
After I sent a few mails of to some agencys i've had some good feedback. Guess the only way to find this work is to spam all the agencys.
