I'm a bit confused right now.

A lot of talk about affiliation and talk of regnow etc.

From what I understood, by affiliation, you mean selling someone else's games via your own website yes?

So how does it actually work?

You find someone who's games you like, then you approach them to see if they wouldnt mind "affiliating" thier games with you. They give you some kind of link to thier ordering system with your affiliate ID as part of the url?

As we're just working on opening a site, I'd be interested in finding some other people to partner with (in order to test the website and give me something to market while we're in development mode). Is that how its supposed to work?

Sorry, I'm from a commercial background, so the affiliate system is a bit alien to me still.

Ta.

You need to register with their vendor system (plimus, esellerate, regnow, whatever), and they will give you buynow links.
If you use regnow or plimus you only need to know the affiliate download link and buynow link.
If they use other system that don't use cookies and are not much reliable, usually you request a "custom build", that is the link is customized INSIDE the game, because without cookie someone could go buying the game directly to their website and you won't get a dollar out of it

If you want you can contact me directly at info@studior4.com for more info :)

So is affiliate sales a significant part of indie income?

I'd guess that affiliate sales arent that high, but of course, it all helps.

This question has come up a lot. The consensus seems to be "it helps a little, but don't depend on it". I would recommend searching on "affiliate" here to get a big sample of people's experiences with affiliates, and which affiliates are worth pursuing.

In my experience with UBM, affiliate were really helpful.
The problem in my case is that UBM isn't a casual game, so your experience may be very different: however even if your affiliate kind of site doesn't match perfectly your style, is still worth trying.

Of course the ESSENTIAL requisite of the affiliate is that he has good traffic, and affiliate with unknown sites is never gonna give you a single sale :)

I know many cases in which an affiliate sold more games than the developer itself from his site...

Really is more like a lottery!
