Just got two of those dreaded "Refund Order Item" emails from RegNow. Basically, they say "See this order from two weeks ago? It was fraudulent and we didn't get it. Too bad for you. Have a nice day".

OK, it happened before and I take it as part of the business. However, these TWO refunds are for one copy of Betty's Beer Bar and one copy of FaceIt, bought by the same person, the same day. Sounds like regular fraud, right?

What really puzzles me is that a google search on the name and city of the person as stated in the order emails actually produces an exact match, even with the phone number!

So, I can think of this possibilities :

1) Stupid fraudster who gave their real address

2) Someone actually stole this guys credit card, and used it to scam me

3) RegNow doesn't give a shit, does a very loose verification on the CC, and declares sales as fraudulent because it doesn't affect them.

So... what do you think has happened, and what can I do?

I strongly suspect #3 is correct. Credit card companies, by US law, are required to take the word of the customer over the merchant. If the customer says this order is bad, the credit card company will reverse the charges. RegNow is passing the hurt on to you. Share and enjoy!

As far as what you can do...I would blacklist this person and never sell to them again, for what that's worth. I wonder if merchants can get together and create blacklists of scammers...I bet the same people rip off a lot of shareware vendors using the same method.

Lots of fraudsters have access to all the required cardholder info (address, phone number, etc), not just the CC number and exp date.
