View Full Version : DSL via Satellite?

Following my research for a suitable place on the beautiful landscape of austria I've noticed that apart for the large-medium cities (Klagenfurt, Graz, Villach, etc) there's no DSL connection there.
So I was suggested to try to use a satellite connection: they're quite expensive compared to normal DSL (about 79 euro/month at least for a bi-directional one) but could solve my problem (if I live in a small town with cheaper prices for other goods at the end of the month I could recoup the DSL price).
My question is: someone here use it? or know someone who does? they're reliable? before spending 1500 euro only for installation I'd like to read some user opinions... :)
Disclaimer:
maybe I just traslated badly the info on the various austrian providers site and DSL is much widely available than I thought. I've looked those sites:

http://www.chello.at

What are you looking to use it for? If you're a gamer, then the delay between your input and the server receiving your packets would be horrible. If it is just to be on the network, then it should be fine, since most network traffic doesn't require instantaneous response. Keep in mind that weather will affect your network. If it rains badly, forget getting or sending signals.
This is not based on my own experience. It is only what I remember reading about when I was looking for DSL/Cable/Satellite Internet access last year.
hey jack_norton,
i would just email those providers and ask. i think you shouldn't have
a problem getting a DSL-like connection unless you go to a farm on top of some high mountain :)
i'm living near vienna right now and my chello connection is actually much better (more reliable) than directly in vienna. and chello is flatrate so you don't have to care about bandwidth or online time.
to sum it up i don't see a reason for satellite in austria. good luck with whatever you're doing :)

Uhm what you say relieve me a bit ;)
The problem is that all the provider offer a DSL check but require either phone name or complete address, and now I don't have those (in the sites isn't displayed it).
I'll try to contact them with email though to see if they answer me.
I hope they do, since the "immobilien" site I contacted didn't reply at all to my email... strange, I write "I want to buy a house" and they don't reply? maybe don't want italian money :D

I'm using a DSL via Sat connection right now.
There seem to be no affordable offers for bidirectional satellite connections here in germany, and even most unidirectional providers demand hilarious amounts of money per transmitted MB.
And then there's T-DSL via Sat. Same price as normal DSL, 40 Euros, but of course a seperate upstream is needed, which becomes quite a problem in a country where there are no ISDN flat rates. It can be as fast as normal DSL, but most of the time, the satellite connection averages the speed of a normal ISDN line. As has been said, the answer time is not suites for any kind of online game. And I have yet to find a file sharing software which works thorugh a VPN connection at all.
In short, I would only use it as a last resort - at least here in germany ;)

No I needed it not for gaming but mostly to upload/download from sites and to have a FIXED and RELIABLE connection (not like here that I have a flat that disconnects often!).
Anyway I'm bothering all the ISP I found here in Austria, let's see what I get :)

I know that in sweden Viasat delivers very cheap one-directional sattelite internet. The modem uses phone (ISDN) for return signals which turns the cost up a bit. I've heard they are introducing it here in norway too, but I don't know about other countries.
