Hello indies,
*I'm curious to what do you consider a good (not great) conversion rate: 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5%, 2.0%, 2.5%, or 3.0%
*Do you count the conversaion rate as the sales divided by the total number of downloads? (tracking the total downloads might be hard to do),
*Do you count it as sales divided by the total number of order page hits? (this is more doable, esp with www.regnow.com)

I'm happy with anything over 1% - below that is an emergency which must be fixed. Most of my stuff converts somewhere between 1% and 2% - I would be ecstatic if I got 3-5%
I calculate conversion as
Number purchased / ((Number of gigs Downloaded/size of app)*correcting factor)
where the correcting factor is an adjustment for failed or incomplete downloads.

1-2% sounds good,congratulations.
How do you get the correcting factor? By guessing?

The correcting factor is determined by a number of things. I have a few closed systems where I get more accurate conversion rates so I can plug the conversion rate in from the closed system and see if that jives with my correcting factor. That implies that the closed system conversion rate is the same as the general conversion rate off the site though, so it's not so good. However I can then try to correlate that with other data. For instance I have a field on my order form "Where did you hear about this game?" -- I can look at the people that filled that in and see what percentage of those people are downloads vs magazine cover cd's and factor that in. So yeah it's a guess... but an educated guess.
