I thought it might be interesting to see how many visits per day people were getting to their websites...
I started fusionapple.com last September, and we currently get 400-600 visits per day.

Dear Jordan Magnuson,
Are the mentioned 400-600 visitors, unique visitors?
Do you live from the earning of sold games?
Posted by jordan1207 at 06-02-2003 04:10 PM
The 400-600 number I quoted is NOT unique visitors, but rather total number of visits (come to site-leave site) per day, which could obviously include people who visit the site multiple times a day (?!).
As for living off my games--I wish! Maybe someday.
Would anyone else care to reply with info on their site? When you started it, what advertising methods you've used, how your visitor numbers have grown (e.g. exponentially, linearly), and how many visitors a day you get currently would be useful info I feel, if you are inclined to share.
It's interesting to note that poll results so far (by NO means conclusive) seem to show a relatively even split between those sites with under 1000 visits/day, and those sites with over 1000--it appears that there are almost two catagories of sites run by people who frequent these forums: those that are "big time" (over 1000 visits/day), and those that are not (under 500). Of course this doesn't necessarily reflect on the quality of the sites, or the quality of the offerings, but merely on the "big time-ness" of those sites. Out of curiosity I would be interested in knowing which sites are 5000visits+.

Thanks for clarifying the poll Jordan, I was confused for a minute there. Anyway, I answered 5,000+ per day because we'll generally get anywhere between 7,000 and 35,000 a day depending on whether or not I have new content. Here are quick answers to your questions:
1: Started the site in October 2002.
2: Only advertising I do is getting sites like Blues, Voodoo, Gamespy and so on to link me. Having developers link me really helps as well since many of them already have their fanbase going.
3: Growth has been pretty steady on average actually. About what I would expect from the site. More and more people are interested in independent games, but it's not a national craze or anything.
To be fair, I'm not a developer so DIY Games is more likely to get linked on various sites than Weapon Studios, if only because there is more content being added on a daily (more or less, hehe) basis.

Retro64.com is one of them. Now if only I could get more of those visitors to download

Dexterity is another (as steve mentioned in an earlier post).
I'd also bet dollars to donuts that goodsol.com gets that amount of traffic.

Wow! DIY Games get's that many VISITS per day?! And you started the site in late 2002?! And you haven't really done any advertising?! Very impressive , although those numbers discourage me . Do you think it's just because DIY Games is an indy-game portal/review site, rather than a developer site (like fusionapple, or weaponstudio)?
Thanks for sharing,

Well, I have done those demo CDs at E3 and GDC, but I only handed out about 500 or 700 at each show. I'm sure it's not the best way to advertise, but I can't exactly submit my site to a place like download.com either, hehe. And yeah, we get decent enough traffic due to the fact that most developers rarely update their sites (which is why I report on a lot of the same games), so people don't feel the need to go back to it.
The thing that helps is reviews/previews getting linked on various gaming sites, and having decent features from time to time that can't be found elswhere very easily. The interview with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman still pulls people in, as does the Mark Currie one. Getting linked on developers websites (like Digital Eel) helps a lot too.
And one final admission as far as advertising goes. A few times I've printed up half page promotional flyers for the site at home and went around to all the news stands that had free newspapers and computer magazines and slipped one into each copy. Same goes for going to places like Barnes & Noble or Tower (places that have a lot of magazines), putting them in the magazine rack or inside computer magazines gets a pretty big response. Guerilla marketing all the way, heh.
In the end having sites like DIY, Game Tunnel, Bytten, and SGM get more traffic is in the interest of everyone. The websites benefit from increased traffic and the possibility of making money, and the developers benefit by having their products names out there more. While I've found that not many of my visitors follow links outside of the website, they do come back pretty frequently and check for new content.
