So here I am trying to get Alien Flux 1.3 released when I suddenly noticed that the demo is mirrored to Timbuktoo and back. How are all these people going to get the update? Do they just "find out" or are we going to have to find them all and tell them?

Cas :)

When doing an update that is large enough I go through the list of download sites submitted and at the same time update the mirrored copy. Most sites won't poll you, you have to do the work yourself. I think a 20%-80% rule is good: update the most important first and then work on all the others when you have time.

But this is something I am getting used to, there are old version around the place all the time. The only real solution I have deviced is to include some sort of updating mechanism in the game, the updating mechanism pointing to your site. This would take care of the problem for those that cared.

And using "redirect link to specific download place" instead of uploading demo everywhere is a nice way to keep every place up-to-date.

Incorporating an updater in your game is surely the best solution. With it you can also keep track effectively of how many games are downloaded and installed.
