Hello

We're pretty much at demo stage for our first product and we're considering submitting it to publishers. We basically have two targets for our game. One is the full bells and whistles version which we can do if we can attract some kind of funding for the rest of development. The other is a more cut-back version of the game if we have to self fund the entire development.

Has anyone got any advice on submitting the game? Such as a list of publishers, requirements for a demo and so on.

Also, has anyone got any ideas on how we can test our game on different machines? All the machine we have access to have got pretty similar setups and graphics cards. Like Geforce 2 MX, 2, 3, and 4.

We'd like it quite reliable for when we send the demo out as we don't want them to get it and can't run it on their system.

Thanks

Scott

check out igda.org, they have a business faq that discusses submitting to publishers, what to send, etc.

"Valve's first title Half Life was developed using a licensed (Quake II) game engine."

That isn't true - at least not entirely.

Many people think that HL was build on top of Q2 but it isn't true. Valve started with the Q2 engine but they switched back to the Q1 engine and enhanced and extended it heavily.

The Q3 engine was id's most used engine (I mean commercial games). Therefore I guess it's a nicer reference.

-----------------------
List of Q3 engine powered games:
Quake 3 Arena (d'uh)
Team Arena
Heavy Metal FAKK 2
American McGee's Alice
Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force
Star Trek: Voyager - Elite Force expansion pack
Elite Force 2
Return to Castle Wolfenstein
Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory
Star Wars: Jedi Knight 2 - Jedi Outcast
Soldier of Fortune 2
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Spearhead
James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire

To be released:
Star Wars: Jedi Academy
American McGee's Oz (2004)
Medal of Honor: Allied Assault - Breakthrough
Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault
Call of Duty
Trinity
-----------------------

Gah! Thanks for pointing out that error Onyx. I had Quake listed in the Half Life doc that the screenshot links too but I missed that comment under the screenshot.

Not wanting to be negative here, but valve didnt actually add THAT much to the quake 1 engine, basically just added paletted texture support and skeltal animation for the characters.

But they did do a significant amount of work on wrapping the engine render stuff into thier own C++ framework.

But the overall difference isnt that great from my own dealings with quake rendering (and HL rendering).

Having said that, they got some great tools guys by hiring a few Quake editor authors.

They also added some nice physics rules (glasses which can be broken, and so on...)
But they didn't change Quake 1 engine a lot, compared to Quake 2.
