Thought this would be an interesting poll. I assume no one here is from Antarctica, so please forgive me if you are. :)

I for one am going to be very interested in the results of this poll for Australia. I don't know what it is about Australia, maybe its the oversupply of overqualified IT professionals unable to earn a decent wage doing IT forced into other jobs or whatever, but it seems to have an amazingly amount of game developers per capita.

South America here - Uruguay. Our country is remarkably similar to New Zealand (about economy, population, geography...). We have much better soccer players, though :)

Originally I'm from Europe/former USSR but I live in the US now so I'll put North America I guess. :)

U.S. of A. over here. I should probably at least put it in my profile, shouldn't I?

Nice, we have at least one person from every continent so far. Well, except for Antartica of course :)

Grr, that should be australasia.

Unless you start talking about continental plates, when things start to get tricky.

Understandably, We get a few earthquakes. And there is the odd volcano

We are relativly safty conscious but are mostly resigned to the fact that if This one (http://www.extremescience.com/BiggestVolcano.htm) goes again then we're all dead.

It's almost enough to put you off your soccer.

AFAIK, there is also a separate name for Australia + New Zealand + other small neighbouring countries: Oceania. Is this right?

is 'from' where you were born, lived most of your life, or are living at the moment? :)

There was a bit of a to-do about automatic world cup entry for one Oceania country not so long ago but FIFA reversed their decicion. Automatic entry was planned to promote the game and help the sorry state of our soccer players, but FIFA decided that wasn't very profitable.

Well, err... not only that... we (South America) did lobby to win back the right to dispute that position. It was precisely us (Uruguay) who beat Australia and went to Japan 2002. After seeing our poor performance, many of us wondered why did we go in the first place :(

Haven't Uruguay got a world cup (probably in 1950)? Uruguay have been one of the best in football for about 80 years. ggambett, I noticed that Recoba was also from Montevideo. Did you follow up him from Inter Milan. This year there are 3 Turkish players in Inter. Seria A will be great this season!

By the way Dexterity, I live in Asia (Turkey).

Four, actually. The last one was in 1950. Since we won the final match against Brazil in the huge Maracana stadium in Brazil, it's considered somewhat of a heroic accomplishment. Which led to the downfall and pathetic status of our soccer today - we still think we are the world champions. We haven't evolved much in the last 50 years :(

BTW, one of those 1950 world champions was Schubert Gambetta :) No relation that I know of, but there aren't many Gambettas here.

We have many great players. Recoba is one of them. There's Forlan playing in Manchester United, lots of others in Spain (the recent champion Pandiani, for example), many more in Italy (Javier Chevantón comes to mind). That's the problem. Our soccer is poor compared to european soccer, so as soon as a guy starts playing good, he gets sold. This season lots of players are emigrating - the goalkeeper Munúa, Horacio Peralta, and many others. Still, they come back here to end their careers, when they're no longer wanted in Europe. It's the case of the great Pablo Bengoechea, who played many years in Barcelona. There are very rare ocasions where we import a player - Peñarol just got the world famous goalkeeper José Luis Chilavert.

As an Antarctican, I feel slighted.... :) I mean, hey, it's a veritable hotbed of game development. And that's about the only hot thing down here! :(

Okay, just kidding.

Maybe, if you put maradona under Pele :)

(and sending the ball over the goal on a world championship deciding penalty doesn't make him much to be considered teh best :))))

Lol... incoming flame :p

Sending a penalty kick over the goal after playing an entire match+extra time in really bad physical condition is not something to be shamed of, really!!

(maybe if Sacchi would have put Zola in his place, now Italy would have won 4 world cups... )

How many matches did Pele played with extra time? how many serious injury did he suffer? the only time I remember was in England '66 where he went out after one single match because he met finally some defender with some "strong manners" :)

Baggio when was 18 suffered a serious injury to both feet. The doctors were sure he would never touch a ball again. Well, he has touched many balls, and put them behind goalkeeper of various teams around the world... :D

Also, Pele never played here in Europe, where surely defender hit hard, harder than in south america. That's why I put for sure Maradona over Baggio, but not Pele. He's only a myth, but in true you cannot say it was a great player, since he didn't play here in EU in a big team. Winning and scoring in that Brazil was a joke, probably if I was in his place I'd have scored 2 goals too ;) hehe

woo, I went to norway once, a long long time ago... things seemed rather expensive (of course, I was a kid, so the only price that mattered to me was the price of a coke) but it was fun.

And nobody ever answered my question. :) US originally, UK at the moment.

Originally from India, currently living in the uk. One can just get by in Chennai (my home city) in India with about $250. $500 would make life very comfortable. Contrast that with $1200 just for rent in Surrey! My wife is an employed software engineer and is supporting my indie dev efforts. Obviously, I have to start chipping in soon. My hope is to hit at least $250 sales a month so that we can possibly move back to India. I love the uk but I dont see it being my long term home.

I think it's entirely upto you. It won't make much difference here. :)

However, from the point-of-view of running an indie game dev business, I feel it will be more relevant to cite the country you are currently living in, because you are affected by the facilities, laws and living expenses etc. of that place. :)

Cheers.

I live on Mars, it's a nice living. Only a bit dark and it's not an expensive living. For about $150 a month you can live very comfortable. Just a joke, I am from The Netherlands (Europe).

Odd, I'd have thought that living on Mars would be rather expensive. I know it is here in the Antarctic. I imagine we have similar average temperatures though. :) But the air-pressure is probably one of the bigger differences. That and atmospheric composition. :)

Easy one Vlado, I have been to both the Check Republic and the Slovak republic, even if we only drove through Slovakia. Some of my friends have been flying hang and paragliders there and they tell me it is a very friendly country (but windy at times). :)
