I am creating an RTS game and have the scale all figured out production wise. My concern is the game will be too big and overwhelming for a new player. Depending on how you count it, the game has 50 to 250 units, (250 is including upgraded types), then a host of special rules, like upgrades, different terrain and catapults and ships moving differently to regular units. Do you use any guidelines to see if it is too big to learn?
Best way to is to test it on actual players. Release an Alfa or beta. Also you could just introduce game components little by little, rather than all at once right at the beginning.
