Okay so I am a young guy. I'm interested in games development, but big companies don't really interest me. I am a newb and don't hope to make money with my games, at least not for ages, so I want to work a blue collar job in the meantime. The thing is with all the new stuff out, VR etc, will the market for indie games exist for long? Is there any point to making them when large companies can make such impressive products with better technology? Games are becoming more complicated and I assume it's harder for the average person to learn enough to make games that people will play, just like solo mathematicians trying to prove theorems which take years of university study to understand.
Hi there I don’t think the indie game scene will die. Although big companies have more money to make complex games, they don’t have the creative freedom that the indie guys have. The big companies are driven by shareholders and have to meet financial targets which in turn makes them play safe and not to take too many risks. Complex doesn’t mean that they are fun. If you take any VR game ever made and compare it a simplistic game like candy crush, which one do you think has the most replayability and most hours played? It’s very rare that a user will clock up 100+ hours on a single VR game
